About Vectis Amateur Radio

Vectis Amateur Radio (VAR) is a hub for all radio amateurs on the Isle of Wight and Solent area. VAR provides links to local resources, activities both within the Isle of Wight and Solent areas and nationally. VAR is intended to facilitate conversations between clubs, and special interest groups and individual radio amateurs and those with  just a nascent interest in amateur radio. The VAR will enable the sharing of ideas, resources, events news and best practice.  The VAR has no membership fees because we do not have any overheads eg  accommodation.

Why a hub

Hubs knit together and provide social glue to promote amateur radio amongst amateurs and the wider community.  The traditional club culture is withering away and is failing to adapt to changes in society.

"The biggest issue is what is technically known as 'disintermediation' - cutting out the middle man. This has always been a driver of change, but with the introduction of the internet and online social connectivity, disintermediation has come of age. The club has become the 'middle man' that is being cut out. You no longer have to visit a 'club' to engage in an activity or hobby. Today's generation connects online - and then uses 'hubs' to engage with activities. Think of Amazon as a 'hub' for purchase, ebay as a 'hub' for exchange (at cost). You will think of loads of other 'hubs' once you start.

The hub experience as rich in transformation (up-skilling) and engagement (hub station, hub equipment loans, etc) open to as many people taking part as you can. Have a 'hub' station available to members. Create a network of online interest groups around the 'hub'. Turn the local 'clubs' into social networks, with interest-related physical meeting groups - technical, propagation, home station, etc.  Richard G4JJP"

What the hub can do for you

Get touch and to register an interest in a particular area of amateur radio and we will try to connect you with amateurs who have the same or a similar interest.  If there a few amateurs a special interest group can be formed to

  • help or

  • for the duration of a particular event  (Special event station, contest etc )

  • To address a particular area of concern

  • For a particular project
